The lead up to Halloween is always fun. Of course, no one in my household is young enough to pass for trick-or-treating anymore, but receiving trick-or-treaters is always a part of the festive fun this season brings. Something about seeing little kids in silly costumes and cute little smiles with teeth that will fall out by the sheer capacity of sweets to be eaten this night, warms my heart. Our house is packed to the brim with sweets and chocolates and little goodies for the kids in our neighbourhood to grab a hold of and stuff their faces with. It’s usually a fight to see who can get to the door quickest and hand out the treats first. (And obviously pick out the best ones to pig out on during our Frightful Film Fest).
Every year, my sister and I insist on decorating the house for Halloween. We don’t go all out every year - I don’t think my mom would appreciate everything stark orange and in your face all the time. But, we usually put out the odd bloody handprints on windows and mirrors, cobwebs and (fake) spiders everywhere and a heavily decorated dining table littered with spooky candelabras, Halloween confetti, skull and bones cutlery and what have you. And, lest we forget, the scary carved pumpkins that guard the front drive of the house, glowing it up with an eerie ambience.
This year, we’re still going to do up the house of course. But I highly doubt we’ll see many trick-or-treaters running round this Halloween. Of course, I’ll have my treats ready just in case there’s the odd one or two, but I don’t imagine there to be as many as last year, which is admittedly a little disheartening, yet completely understandable. I suppose everyone will be at home having their own spooky film nights or Halloween parties this year. I know we definitely will be. In fact, I have a whole list of movies ready for our Frightful Film Fest, as I do every year. I’m not usually a horror movie fan, but Halloween brings out a different side to me. I’m always down for a good scare.
Speaking of good scare, I got my sister so good yesterday. So much so that I made her cry, and she rarely ever does, which is why I was so chuffed with the reaction I got. Right so, my sister is deathly afraid of spiders. Like absolutely petrified of them. It doesn’t matter if they were real or fake (which I’d argue is amongst one of the stranger phobias I’ve heard of. Another one being the squeezing of ketchup out of the bottle – I have been asked to specify that this phobia belongs to another).
You see, out of all of us, she’s the more rational one and usually isn’t bothered by stuff or scare so easily. However, I’ve learned that if I need to terrify the shit out of her, it will almost certainly involve spiders – real or fake, dead or alive. It doesn’t really matter. But if there is a spider involved, she will absolutely burst into tears.
And so naturally, with it being spooky season and all, I had to take advantage of this phobia and prank her. My mom brought some enormous stuffed spiders the other day and so I took the liberty in taking one and hiding it. Annie was in the kitchen making dinner at the time I decided to pull this off. This was the perfect moment to pounce. I wondered around to her side and gently placed a huge stuffed spider, like it was actually massive, next to her plate on the worktop. When I tell you she screamed oh my god you’d think she had just witnessed a murder or something. The shrieks were brilliantly unexpected, and I was absolutely successful (except from her threats with the fork she had in hand for defence, but it was so worth it). My only regret is that I didn’t film it, but alas, the experience was all I need. It was a simple prank with a simple execution yes, but the outcome was excellently unmatched. It honestly made my day, so I thought I’d share it with you. Don’t forget to prank your siblings and family this Halloween folks! I can guarantee it’s worth all of the revenge threats of vengeance with dining cutlery. All I would say is maybe make sure to film it – either for leverage or for evidence.

Apologies for no blog post last week. It was the end of my first module since being back at uni so naturally I was overwhelmed with deadlines and the crippling academic pressure married to them.
Have a horrifying yet happy Halloween!
